In our daily life, we commonly see LED for mobile phone, motor cycle, camera flash or Christmas lamps. But in the last three months, University of Cambridge has been developing an LED lamps with price only $3. Compared to common lamps, this LED is 12x brighter, and can save power up to 3x, with up to 100 hours lasting. If the people in the world use this new LED, the electricity consumption will decrease from 20% to 5%.

The production of one single LED for house lamps, it costs around $25 each. But with the LED – which was created by Professor Colin Humphreys – , by using Galium as the semi-conductor material, the production cost can be solved.

RFMD factory in Durham will start the trial production, and this LED lamps are approximately going to be sold within the next two years.
